Students rock at youth conference
Some 300 high school students attended a high intensity youth conference on Wednesday night at Bishop Ryan High School. Rev. Justin Walz, the energetic chaplain at the Catholic high school, said the event, which students at Ryan are calling “The ROCK,” is intended to draw Catholic and non-Catholic Christian students from around the community. The event included a rosary, drawings for prizes such as $100, and an address by Rev. James Shea, president at the University of Mary in Bismarck and the youngest college president in the country. Assistant chaplains at Ryan helped organize the whole thing, from the graphics on the posters advertising the event, to the set-up of the stage. Lights were dimmed in the school gymnasium, incense wafted into the air, and images of the Virgin Mary appeared on an overhead screen as Walz and assistant chaplains knelt in front of the stage and led the large audience in five decades of the rosary.
