Latinos in N.D.

Andrea Johnson/MDN --- John Morrow, a Minot State University spanish associate professor, holds the book “Latino America: A State by State Encyclopedia” in which he wrote two chapters about the history of Latino presence in North Dakota.
November 17, 2009

North Dakota has more Latino history than some residents of the state might think, said Minot State University Spanish associate professor John Morrow. Morrow wrote two chapters about the Latino presence in North Dakota for “Latino America: A State By State Encyclopedia,” an encyclopedia that covers the history of Latinos in all 50 states. Morrow, who is originally from Canada, traveled to sites in North Dakota and South Dakota during his research. He interviewed descendants of families who had been there since the first Spanish explorers came to the Dakotas a year or two after the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Morrow points out that those early explorers, many of whom had French or English names, were actually subjects of the Spanish crown, since the area was owned by Spain. Citizenship was easy enough to get; explorers stopped in St. Louis and applied for citizenship, which they were given, so they could enter into the fur trade in the region.
