Far afield

Terry J. Aman/MDN - - Minot artist Judy Bell, shown here with one of her larger pieces, has an exhibit of some 40 pieces titled “Garden View” on display in the James Memorial Art Center in Williston.
November 19, 2009

Whatever the weather, there is a “Garden View” at the James Memorial Arts Center in Williston through Dec. 18. Forty watercolors by artist Judy Bell featuring flowers, landscapes, wildflowers, birds and birdhouses will grace the walls. “They’re of various sizes,” she said, and indeed she paints a range. The largest of her works command the walls in her south Minot home. “I also have some miniature prints there ranging in size from 10 inches-by-14 inches down to 6 inches-by-7 inches, and those are mostly songbirds.” Bell attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks as a fine arts major, but her present day style is largely self-taught. Her work consists of traditional and contemporary watercolors which are surprisingly crisp for the medium she uses. Bell said she has been painting all of her life, and puts her run as a professional artist at about 35 years. She does all her own matting and framing in her spacious home studio.
